The R&D Program on Safety and Technology is a unique program in which governmental departments, research institutes, companies and important branch organisations are represented. Together they are exploring the greatest challenges on Safety and Technology in their specific area and articulating research requests. The Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations brought these participants together in what we call a ‘Dutch experience’. This Dutch Experience contributes to safer, quicker and better safety work. Our goal is to develop and to use technology to make society as safe as one may expect to. It is also to protect our police-, fireman and ambulance staff and all the other security workers with the best knowledge we have – or have to develop.
The Arena’s
We formed eight arena’s in which the three Ministries, security services, research institutes and other key role players are represented. Professionals are challenged in each arena in an open discussion to think of problems to be solved and to describe the need for knowledge in that particular area. Many interesting and very divers subjects will be the outcome of this process. Varying from even smarter methods to identify persons to new security concepts for civilians to prevent burglary. Also there is a need for multidisciplinary solutions that is both technical and sociological based. The Dutch coalition parties decided in their coalition agreement to spend an additional 1775 million euros on innovation. There is a broad sense of importance to invest in a knowledge economy. In Brussel the Netherlands opened last month the Netherlands house for Education and Research.
